Alison Hunt

Main areas of interest

Alison is interested in how positive attitudes by managers to flexible working can remove barriers to work and increase diversity.  She believes line managers have a pivotal role in building a work environment of respect, empowerment and maintaining mental wellbeing.

Alison is concerned with promoting practical solutions which enable staff to thrive.  If senior managers also have this understanding of flexibility and diversity then the whole organisational culture benefits, employees feel positive and productive.

Alison is also interested in how privilege, power and voice play out in an organisation to the benefit or otherwise of minority groups.

Back ground

Alison has over ten years experience of managing equality and diversity in the higher education sector. She also has over 25 years experience of training, teaching and presenting mainly in the public and third sectors.

Prior to becoming an equality specialist, Alison worked for six years researching and promoting flexible working in the higher education sector.  This was part of a major national project on flexible working which provided the sector with recommendations around flexible work alongside practical help and training for line managers.  This included separate research into flexible working for academic staff and coping with caring responsibilities such as eldercare.

Alison has wide experience of offering policy, practical solutions and training across all aspects of equality - including supporting LGB and transgender staff and students and supporting staff and students with disabilities. Alison is particularly interested in how the design of web and other materials impact on diversity and disability.

Specific higher education work includes implementing Athena SWAN and the Race Equality Charter and embedding an inclusive approach to curricula and teaching practice.

Alison is currently working with Jill Scott from Flexible Work Solutions to offer training and support on flexible working and equality.
